Francis Chan - In the Valley of the Shadow of Death - Part 1 of 2
blakebaggott: What if Jesus did satisfy the wrath of God, but it...
What if Jesus did satisfy the wrath of God, but it wasn’t God’s wrath toward mankind. It was instead God’s wrath toward sin, which had infiltrated mankind and the cosmos as a whole. Because if God isn’t upset about sin, then is He really good? And if sin isn’t punished, then is that akin to His being cool with sin?
What if Jesus satisfied God’s wrath toward sin because it was the one thing that caused us to be separated from Him in the first place? God’s wrath may not be toward individuals, since He loves individuals, but what if His wrath is toward the thing that hinders individuals from living in perfect harmony with Him… sin?
Just some thoughts.
Sounds reasonable based on scripture - God hates sin, no doubt. He hates the sinner because the sinner is full of sin and choosing sin, but he doesn’t hate the individual - He sends Christ for the individual to have a way to shed the sin.
So is anyone saying something is wrong with this explanation?
Anonymous asked: I cut and stuff but what if I think I want to get better but at the same time I don't at all.
TRIGGER WARNING: CUTTING / SELF HARM / RAPE.
I’m going to turn this question up side down and offend anyone who doesn’t cut probably and perhaps trigger some - hence the warning.
…at the same time I don’t want to?
Do you want to stop before scars get worse? Before you get an infection? Before more people notice and freak out - because let’s face it, most of society doesn’t “get it”. There’s millions of reasons to quit…
But that’s not reasons I don’t know:I’d rather spend my time addressing the stress that drives you to feel the need to cut.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you to stop actually. I’ll tell you that would be best because of your health and beauty - But what else are you going to do for stress relief? Something worse? I pray not. Instead I want to give you solutions.
What you SHOULD try to fix
I don’t know you, and anon really makes it harder - I can’t even look at your blog for hints you’ve given.. But I’m going to bet you have some issues with your family life, probably a bad relationship with dad, or no relationship with him. When there’s stress family probably adds more stress instead of being who you can turn to for help. Perhaps bullied, perhaps abused or raped. All these reasons are FAR too common.
What do we do to solve those issues?
We need to figure out what adds stress to your life and try to find a strategy to reduce or eliminate it. At some ages and in some situations this is extremely difficult.
Who can you rely on for help?
Well humans fail, plain and simple. That includes me. Every follower I’ve truly tried to get close to I’ve always said I’ll fail - Know that right now, no use finding out later - Know it before we even talk hardly any.
But God - The almighty creator of the universe - He doesn’t fail. He’ll let you walk away, He won’t force you to do His way or His will - But if you truly seek Him with all your might He’ll deliver you from anything. And He’ll send some humans along doing His will to deliver on promises.
God will use people in your life, once you have turned 100% to God, to help. The faces and names may change, but God, and the Holy Spirit inside the people, will be who helps you. Sometimes one person may give food or clothes, another may be there for emotional support, another for something else.. But God will be the one working all the strings and orchestrating His team to work together to help those who trust Him.
Now I’m not talking trust a little, half way, or say a 2 second sinner prayer - That stuff is all useless and against what the Bible says. The Bible says DIE to your old self, your old ways, 100% crucify your old ways on the cross with Jesus - Otherwise you aren’t turning to God.
But if you do that, truly do it, it’s obvious when people are faking it - Then God provides blessings beyond your wildest dreams. These blessings sometimes are purely emotional, other times they are physical - clothes, vacations, cars, who knows what.
God is amazing.
Come talk to me about Him. (:
Go talk to her if you don’t know Christ!
Begging God for forgiveness..
Trigger warning?
I want to be clear begging God for forgiveness is NOTHING like begging an abuser for forgiveness.
If I’m driving down the interstate in my car, windows down, and have my cat in the car and it’s trying to jump out the window I care to stop it - I will do anything in my power to stop it, including restrain it, offend it, maybe even physically punish it for trying to get out the window hoping it stops trying.. but once it’s jumped out it has little chance of being saved, very little.. for the cat to beg on the side of the road for the owner to turn around and come get it, and take it to the vet instead of let it lay there and die alone is the kind of begging for forgiveness I describe God wants us to do - To realize jumping out the window was something we never should have tried, and sure aren’t going to do again.
It’s NOT someone demanding the cat apologize for being a cat and hurting it because it’s a cat. That’s purely wrong, purely the person doing the abuse in the wrong - the cat is 100% in the right, and if the cat turned to a new owner hopefully it would be safe for eternity. In fact in that case the cat should jump and hope someone else picks it up.
The cat was born curious, it was born interested in seeing what is outside the car, it’s natural for it to run around and want to jump through openings.
Now let’s instead say this cat is a person, this person is intelligent and fully understands they’ll get hurt jumping out. They know beyond any doubt they won’t die, but worst case will end up paralyzed for life. Perhaps they’ll get lucky and nothing at all happen, they may land and roll perfectly in some soft sand or something.. and want to do it again..
There’s 6 billion people alive today who are taking this car ride. The ones that are still hearing the lesson - you care about them, if they jump out you stop and say hey, listen to this lesson before you leap. Or perhaps the lesson wasn’t even started for them.
If you drive along and talk to people who jumped out and said didn’t you hear the lesson? And they say no, tell me - then great, the door of their heart is open to hear about Jesus and what He saved us from.
There’s TONS out there who say wow this really hurt but I don’t understand what I did wrong to get hurt. That is what Christians should be doing for those outside the church - It’s NOT about how stupid it was to jump or anything else - They didn’t know - Nobody told them.
If you come along and there is a guy who says yeah, I heard the warning but wow this is a great feeling flying through the air - Can I hop in your car and jump out in a minute?
That person? That’s not worth the time or the gas to help - They’ve decided what they want, they know the consequences, and they choose the consequences.
And BTW the car ride ends in an eternity where everything we dream of being good and perfect is there waiting for us. Or we can choose to be paralyzed laying on the side of the road for eternity.
Who does Jesus want to save?
Matthew 9:12-13 NLT
When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor-sick people do.” Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”
We must take the gospel to the streets
Because there is no other plan, people are perishing without Christ. Jesus is the ONLY way of Salvation
I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News [7] but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you.I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed. Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.
Faith without good deeds is dead..
14 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?
17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
18 Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”
19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God.[f] Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
21 Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete.23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”[g] He was even called the friend of God.[h] 24 So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
25 Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. 26 Just as the body is dead without breath,[i] so also faith is dead without good works.
James 2:14-26 NLT
